“Widow's Bay” or Widow's Bay is a rare combination of horror and characteristic comedy, where it is scary as much as it is funny, because both feelings are fed by one source, the helplessness of a person in front of something ancient and incomprehensible. The story takes place on a small island town off the coast of New England, where the amenities of the wider world are lacking, communications are spotty, residents are superstitious, and old legends about a curse sound like jokes until they come true. Mayor Tom Loftis dreams of revitalizing a dying community, making it a tourist destination, giving his son a normal future and proving to everyone that he is not a weakling. And for a while it seems that the plan is working, people come, money appears, hope returns, but at the same time, what the island has kept under water for decades awakens. The series is captivating because it doesn’t make the hero a superman, he is vulnerable, funny, stubborn and very human, and it is precisely such people who usually turn out to be the last line of defense. There is a lot of local color, strange officials, nervous conversations and moments when horror breaks through the bustle of everyday life. This is an excellent choice for the viewer who loves mysteries, the atmosphere of a seaside curse and stories where laughter helps not to go crazy.
